The A Level consists of six theory units, a practical unit and an oral assessment. Physical Education at A level is a demanding and academically challenging subject with a significant amount of sport and exercise science content. It is preparation for those who may be considering studying courses such as Physical Education Teaching, Physiotherapy, Sport Psychology or Dietetics. You will gain an insight into how the body and mind work together to influence sports performance, both positively and negatively. You will be required to demonstrate and apply knowledge of factors underpinning involvement in physical activity and sport and analyse and evaluate those factors in sports performance.

Course Description:


This course will be ideal for you if you have a strong interest in sport and the theory of sport.  It will help you understand and apply theoretical work to improve your own sporting performance.


Course content: 

Year 1

Unit 1: Anatomy & Physiology including Biomechanics

Unit 2: Socio-cultural themes in Sport

Unit 3: Sport Psychology

Practical Assessment: One activity (from a specified list)

Oral Assessment: Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for Improvement (EAPI)

Year 2 

Unit 4: Exercise Physiology, Technology and Biomechanics

Unit 5: Sport in Society

Unit 6: Sport Psychology 

Practical Assessment:  One activity (from a specified list)

Oral Assessment: Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for Improvement (EAPI)  

Assessment Format

Exam Paper 1 : Unit 1 and 4 (35%) 
Exam Paper 2: Units 2, 3, 5 and 6 (35%)
Practical Assessment in ONE sport (15%)
Oral Assessment- EAPI (15%)

Course Entry Requirements:
GCSE grade 6 in PE if taken, and grade 5 in English Language and any Science
